Green Schools

Water, water everywhere
Please don't waste

Show the world you care!

We, in Cloverfield NS are proud to be a designated Green School. We registered for the programme back in 2005 and were delighted to be presented with our first Green flag in the summer of 2007 for the great work done by pupils, staff and the entire school community on the Litter and Waste theme. We then set about work on the Energy theme and received our second Green flag in 2009. The Green schools programme unites all in working together for the good of the environment and raises awareness in the pupils which will stay with them throughout their lives.

Green Schools Water Theme

We are currently busy working on the Water theme of the Green Schools programme. Our Green Schools committee meets every month or so and we discuss ways in which we can try to save water or ideas that can be used in our homes. We go back to our classes and with our teachers we work on various aspects of water in different subject areas. We are all learning how to appreciate water, how important it is in all aspects of life and where it comes from and goes to. We often use websites which have fun and educational games and activities about The Water Cycle and so on. Learning about Water is cool!We will be having an assessment visit soon and are submitting our application for the flag. We really hope that we will be successful!

Some Tips for Saving Water

  • Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.
  • Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap.
  • For cold drinks keep a jug of water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap. This way, every drop goes down you and not the drain.
  • Collect the water you use for rinsing fruits and vegetables, then reuse it to water houseplants.
  • We're more likely to notice leaks indoors, but don't forget to check outdoor taps, sprinklers and hoses for leaks.
  • Upgrade older toilets with water efficient models.
  • Teach your children to turn off taps tightly after each use.
  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth and save 25 gallons a month
  • If your toilet has a large old-style cistern, reduce the amount of water used for each flush by inserting a displacement device in the tank (e.g. a 1 litre bottle filled with water).

Go green and protect our planet

The future is in our hands
Together we can make a difference!

Energy Green Flag Award
Principal Noreen O'Dea and Marie O'Dea,6th Class and Nicole Kenny, 2nd Class, travelled to the Lifetime Lab in Cork at the end of May, 2009 where they were presented with the school's 2nd Green Flag. The whole school community was delighted that the flag had been renewed as it is a great honour to have this international award flying outside one's school. The school was presented with its 2nd green flag for continuing the great work being done in the area of Litter and Waste and for the tremendous work done in the area of Energy. This involved educating not only the pupils but the staff, parents and wider community about the necessity to conserve Energy and to move towards the use of renewable sources of Energy where possible. The pupils developed the school's motto "Show the Earth you care, Be Energy aware!" and sang their Energy song "Turn Off The Lights" as well as publishing a brochure featuring "30 Ways to help the Earth" and distributing it in the local community. We look forward to working on the "Water" theme of the Green Schools programme over the coming 2 years and hope to keep the Green flag flying outside the school!

Keep Cloverfield clean

And a flag will soon be seen!

Energy Awareness
As we worked towards our second Green Flag, we focused on the theme of Energy. As we followed the seven steps of the programme, we strove to develop an ever-growing awareness of the need to save energy, to reduce energy consumption and endeavoured to deliver this message to the wider community outside the school. Our activities were many and varied and include lessons in many subject areas, poster-making, motto/rhyme writing, sign design as well as putting together a booklet entitled "30 Ways To Help The Earth", for distribution in the community.
Our new Green Code was
"Show the Earth you care,
Be Energy Aware!"

During the 2007/08 school year pupils from 3rd to 6th classes attended an Energy Workshop in the Dooradoyle Library where they learned lots about types of energy, the properties of energy, renewable/non-renewable energy sources, saving of energy, etc... The interactive workshop held by SEI was both informative and enjoyable and pupils enjoyed the entertaining presentations, games and experiments.
